Dr. Justin Owens is a research scientist specializing in vulnerable road user (VRU) safety in the Division of Vehicle, Driver, & System Safety. Dr. Owens has been researching VRU safety issues for over 20 years. Since coming to VTTI in 2008, he has conducted research addressing a wide range of safety-related problems including the development of effective outreach messaging to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety; evaluation of the effects of cognitive distraction, fatigue, and mobile phone use on crash risk; and evaluating and improving the use of vehicle-related technology by senior drivers. Prior to joining VTTI, Dr. Owens earned his Ph.D. in cognitive science from Brown University and his M.S. in applied psychology from Clemson University.
