Andrew (Andy) MS, PE, is a Senior Research Associate that leads the Demonstration and Deployment Research Group. Following work in the environmental consulting and IT fields Andy moved to VTTI 16 years ago to lead the Technical Operations Group in the Center for Technology Development. He subsequently served as the Director of Smart Road Operations, Executive Director of the I-81 Corridor Coalition, and Leader of the Virginia Green Highway Initiative. Andy has managed numerous large federally funded projects and acted as chief technical consultant on many others where he facilitated the development and deployment of vehicle data acquisition systems and their application to naturalistic research. He has extensive experience with connected, automated, and intelligent transportation systems, as well as building and managing diverse consortiums to accomplish larger collective goals. Andy’s current work focuses on wide range of topics that include highway freight safety and efficiency, low-speed autonomous vehicles, road weather safety, animal-vehicle conflict mitigation, bus transit efficiency, adverse road salt environmental impacts, and unmanned aircraft system (i.e., drone) applications in support of ground transportation. Andy also serves on numerous national and state committees and panels, mostly notably for the National Academies Transportation Research Board (TRB), the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), and the American Meteorological Society (AMS), and VDOT.
