Division of Technology Implementation is saving money through connected vehicle technologies

VTTI’s Division of Technology Implementation (DTI) is evaluating how to develop more cost-efficient connected vehicle technologies. Currently short-range communications deployment models generally accepted by industry require numerous radios to be installed on infrastructure that is often owned by departments of transportation or local communities, driving up scaled deployment costs. VTTI is in the final stages of embarking on a project that could help provide needed solutions at lower cost.

The division is collaborating with influential companies such as American Tower, Audi, Intel, and Qualcomm to figure out how to decrease the cost and complexity of deployment by employing new technologies such as multi-access edge computing. These tools may be deployed to virtualize the hardware deployment while maintaining the performance required for safety-critical applications. This project will help to determine whether the performance targets can be met and how to make these fascinating technologies more financially viable.
