Welcome to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute's (VTTI's) online calculator to estimate the return-on-investment (ROI) of advanced safety technologies for Class 7 and 8 heavy vehicles. VTTI developed this website to provide heavy vehicle fleets with a tool to assess the business case of equipping their large trucks with advanced safety technologies.
VTTI's ROI calculator allows fleets to use their data to generate an individualized ROI estimate. However, default values are provided based on data collected from real-world research, discussions with technology manufacturers, and information provided directly from motor carriers.
What Safety Technologies are Included on This Website
VTTI's ROI calculator assesses the potential cost-benefits of automatic emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning (LDW), and/or video-based driver monitoring systems. A more detailed description of these technologies can be found on the Background page.
- AEB: Safety technology that uses forward collision warnings and automatic vehicle braking to prevent rear-end crashes.
- LDW: Safety technology that uses machine vision and driver alerts to prevent unintentional lane deviations that result in sideswipes, run-off-road crashes, and rollovers.
- Video-based driver monitoring systems: Safety technology that uses one or more cameras and sensors to monitor driver performance and surrounding roadway. Unlike the other technologies, the effectiveness and return-on-investment of video-based driver monitoring systems relies on effective usage of data, driver training, management, and good safety culture.
