Data Services
Data Services handles all data uploads to the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) servers and facilitates researchers in viewing, maintaining, and reducing their data sets. Data Services personnel process the raw data collected in VTTI studies and reduce it into a format that allows specific research questions to be accurately and effectively answered. A data viewer developed in-house supports the synchronizing of video and performance data. Data Services facilitated researchers in uploading and reducing the dataset on one project which expanded about 6.5TB and they have collected and reduced about 16 TB of data for another large-scale naturalistic driving study conducted by VTTI.
Data Reduction Capabilities
Data Services utilizes two full-time data reduction laboratories with a typical data reduction staff of 20-40 people (staff varies depending on the project's needs). Reductionists undergo a rigorous training process before they are allowed to reduce data and data reduction tasks are limited to 20 hours per week per person due to the computer intensive nature of the tasks.
