Warren N. Hardy, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center for Injury Biomechanics. He has formal training in engineering science, biomechanics and biomedical engineering. His experience includes impact and injury response, tolerance properties of biological materials, macro/micro mechanisms of trauma, physical and numerical surrogate development and automotive crash testing. His teaching interests are in the areas of biomedical instrumentation design, experimental methods in impact biomechanics, and trauma biomechanics.
The Center for Injury Biomechanics
has partnered with VTTI to combine auto safety expertise with injury biomechanics expertise. The CIB performs research investigating human tolerance to impact loading with the application of this research to include automobile safety, military restraints, and sports biomechanics.
To accomplish this, the center combines experimental testing of dummy and human surrogates as well as computational modeling in order to develop human impact injury criteria.
As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department and the School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences at Virginia Tech, CIB offers an excellent opportunity for graduate student education through a wide variety of biomechanics courses and research experience.
Currently the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest Center for Injury Biomechanics has three core research facilities that include the Wake Forest University Medical Center, the Impact Biomechanics lab located at the Institute for Critical Thinking and Sciences building at Virginia Tech, and the Impact Laboratory and Crash Sled located at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center. In addition to these facilities, CIB utilizes several unique collaborative research facilities for it's research which include the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute just to name a few.
